Celebrating the Heart of CEC: Volunteer Appreciation Week
April 19-25, 2026, is Volunteer Appreciation Week. At CEC, our mission is clear: to ensure that individuals with exceptionalities receive the high-quality education, opportunities, and support they deserve. But this mission doesn’t happen on its own. It’s powered by people—passionate, dedicated volunteers who give their time, expertise, and energy to strengthen the field of special education.
Volunteers Are the Foundation of CEC
From leading Divisions, Units, and chapters to serving on committees, presenting at conferences, reviewing content, mentoring emerging professionals, and advocating for the field, CEC volunteers shape nearly every aspect of what we do. Their contributions extend far beyond individual efforts; they help build a stronger, more connected professional community that supports educators and improves outcomes for children and youth with exceptionalities. Over the last year, more than 700 CEC members volunteered approximately 43,000 hours of their time.
CEC would not exist without our volunteers.
Their leadership helps guide our strategic direction. Their voices help influence policy and practice. Their passion helps grow and strengthen our community. Their commitment helps advance the profession. Every hour given creates a ripple effect that impacts educators, families, and students across the country and around the world.
Making an Impact Together
CEC volunteers bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise to the table. Whether they’re helping plan professional learning opportunities, supporting membership growth, contributing to publications, or welcoming new members into the community, their efforts matter.
Volunteers help:
Advance professional excellence
Strengthen the special education workforce
Promote inclusive and equitable practices
Support collaboration across disciplines
Elevate the voices of educators and professionals
Because of our volunteers, CEC continues to grow, evolve, and lead.
Thank You for Your Dedication

To every CEC volunteer: thank you. Thank you for your leadership, ideas, advocacy, and commitment to excellence. Thank you for helping us build a stronger future for the field of special education.
